What is GEO?
GEO stands for Generative Engine Optimization, the optimization for generative AI systems such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews or Bing Copilot. While classic SEO aims at the blue links in Google search, GEO is about being named in the written-out answers of these AI systems.
The difference matters: an AI answer often names only two or three providers. If you are not one of them, you practically do not exist for the person searching, no matter how good your website is otherwise.
Why this matters for local businesses in particular
Questions like “which roofer in Lüneburg is worth recommending?” or “nice café in the old town” are increasingly asked to AI systems. The answer relies on what the AI finds and understands about you on the web: your website, your Google Business Profile, reviews and mentions on local directories.
If that foundation is missing, the AI falls back on the businesses it has more solid signals about. Usually that is the competitor with more reviews and clearer content.
The four levers of AI visibility
- Accessibility: AI crawlers such as GPTBot and PerplexityBot need permission to read your site (robots.txt) and need to be able to understand it technically.
- Structure: Clear headings, structured data (Schema.org) and unambiguous details about your services, location and opening hours help the AI classify you correctly.
- Content: Quotable, concrete passages that answer a question directly get picked up more often than vague marketing sentences.
- Reputation: Reviews and mentions on trustworthy sources are a strong signal for AI systems.
These four work together. A technically perfect site without reviews gets skipped just as much as a well-known business whose website gives the AI nothing usable.
How to get started
The first step is an honest look at the status quo: does your business show up in AI answers for your most important search terms at all, and if so, in which position? That is exactly what we check in our free short check with real Perplexity queries.
On that basis you can improve in a targeted way: add missing schema, make content quotable, build up reviews. GEO is not a trick, it is solid groundwork that also helps you in classic Google search.
Frequently asked questions
Is GEO the same as SEO?
No, but they overlap a lot. SEO aims at rankings in classic search, GEO at mentions in AI answers. Many measures (clean schema, clear content, good reputation) pay into both.
Can I stop AI systems from using my site?
Yes, individual AI crawlers can be excluded via robots.txt. But for visibility in AI answers you usually want to allow them explicitly.
How fast does GEO work?
AI systems update their knowledge continuously, but not instantly. Expect weeks, not days. Reviews and mentions need some lead time anyway.
