Google AI Overviews: what changes for local businesses in 2026

July 2026 · 6 min read

Google now answers many searches with an AI summary at the very top, above the blue links. It reaches over two billion people a month. Here is what that means for a local business, and how to be named in it.

The shift in one line: visibility is moving from ranking in the list to being named in the answer. The groundwork that gets you there is the same groundwork that helps everywhere else.

What AI Overviews are

An AI Overview is the AI-written summary Google now places at the very top of many search results, above the familiar blue links. Instead of a list to click through, you get a paragraph that answers the question directly and names a few sources. It is not a niche feature: Google says AI Overviews reach over two billion users a month across more than 200 countries. For a lot of searches, the AI Overview is now the first thing people read, and sometimes the only thing.

Fewer clicks, a new kind of visibility

The uncomfortable part first: AI Overviews answer many questions right on the page, so fewer people click through to a website. Gartner even predicted that traditional search volume would drop by a quarter by 2026. But there is an upside that matters more for a local business: being named in that summary. If the overview for "good breakfast in Lüneburg" mentions your café, you have won the most valuable spot on the page, even without a click. Visibility is shifting from "rank in the list" to "get named in the answer".

Old result list vs AI Overview

The rules of the game change a little. The table shows how.

A concrete example

Say you run a café in Lüneburg and someone searches "where to have breakfast in Lüneburg". Google reads the pages it trusts on the topic, café sites, local blogs, directory listings and Google Business Profiles, and writes a short answer that names two or three places with a reason each. Whether yours is one of them comes down to signals Google can actually see: does your site say, in plain words, that you serve breakfast, from when and where; is your profile complete with photos and recent reviews; do other local pages mention you. The café that has quietly done this groundwork gets named. The one with a thin site and an empty profile does not, no matter how good the coffee is.

What gets pulled into an AI Overview

Google’s AI builds the summary from pages it can read, classify and trust. In practice, the same few things decide whether you are quoted:

  • Direct answers. Short, concrete passages that answer a real question, opening hours, prices, who it is for, get pulled far more often than vague marketing.
  • Structured data. Clean Schema.org markup (LocalBusiness, FAQ) tells the AI what you are without guessing.
  • Trust signals. Reviews, a complete Google Business Profile and consistent details make the AI comfortable naming you.
  • Access. The page has to be readable without heavy JavaScript, and AI crawlers must not be blocked.

What a local business should do

None of this needs a new strategy. It needs the groundwork done well: write clear answers into your pages, add a short FAQ, fill in your Schema.org data, keep your Google Business Profile and reviews in shape, and do not block the crawlers. That is the same work that helps you in classic Google search and in ChatGPT and Perplexity, so it pays off three times over. Frequently asked questions

Will AI Overviews kill my website traffic?

They reduce clicks for purely informational searches, yes. But for local and commercial searches, being named in the overview often matters more than a click, and the groundwork that gets you cited also protects your classic ranking.

Can I opt out of AI Overviews?

Not selectively in any reliable way, and you usually would not want to. Being absent from the summary just means a competitor gets named instead. The better move is to earn the mention.

Do I need different content for AI Overviews and Google?

No. Clear structure, concrete answers and clean schema serve both. AI Overviews reward the same quality Google has always wanted, just more strictly.

How do I know if I show up?

Search your key terms and read the overview, and check the same questions in ChatGPT and Perplexity. That is exactly what we do in our free short check.

Does this only matter for Google?

No. The same kind of summary appears in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Bing Copilot, and they draw on the same signals. Doing the work once helps you across all of them.
