Why page 2 on Google is practically invisible

July 2026 · 4 min read

“Where is the best place to hide a body? On page 2 of Google.” The joke is old, but it holds up: most clicks happen on the first results. Whatever sits behind them does not exist for most searchers.

People look up, not down

Searchers skim the first results and click whatever fits. Only a small share scrolls to the bottom of page 1, and almost nobody turns to page 2. Position 1 gets many times the clicks of position 10.

For you that means: the difference between rank 8 and rank 3 can decide whether you get noticeably more enquiries, even though both are “on page 1”.

Why you are stuck on page 2

Usually there is no single reason behind it, but a sum of them: thin content, unclear headings, missing schema, slow technology or too few local signals. Google finds nothing that clearly lifts your site above the competition.

The way forward

The good news: page 1 is not luck, it is the result of technology, structure and content that matches search intent. Instead of tinkering with everything at once, it pays to start with the biggest levers.

That is exactly what a short check shows: the three things costing your site the most visibility right now. Fix those first and you usually see the most movement.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to reach page 1?

That depends on the competition and on your starting point. Local searches with little competition go faster, heavily contested terms take months and continuous work.

Does paid advertising not do the same thing?

Ads bring visibility immediately, but only for as long as you pay. Good organic rankings keep working. Doing both together can make sense.
